Arrest of comedian Artie Lange highlights the magnitude of drug addiction
The life of renowned American comedian and actor Artie Lange has been a rough ride filled with numerous episodes of addiction and relapse. In 2017 alone, he was arrested twice for possessing drugs and once for missing a court date in December. He has witnessed numerous relapses and two suicide attempts due to his constant battle with drug addiction. He has attributed his problems at work to drug addiction.
Best known for his eight-year stint in “The Howard Stern Show,” Lange has now pled guilty in a New Jersey court of illegal possession of 81 decks of heroin as part of his plea deal. However, prosecutors have dismissed the charges for the illegal possession of cocaine levelled against him on Feb. 23, 2016. A deck commonly refers to a bag of heroin weighing around 1-1.5 ounces and is one dose for the user. Each dose costs around $5 to $10.
According to reports, Lange is likely to be released soon, but he will be sentenced on Feb. 23, 2018. The actor was earlier arrested on Dec. 12 from his home after failing to appear for court hearings related to a drug arrest case filed in May 2017.
Ins and outs of drug addiction
The arrest of Lange highlights the problem of drug addiction in the United States. Addiction is a chronic illness that makes one feel an irrepressible urge to consume drugs. Though one takes drugs to feel relaxed or energized, their repeated use often causes brain damage eventually leading to addiction. In turn, addiction triggers increased dependence on drugs that impairs the ability to maintain self-control and make sound decisions.
Drug addiction can be caused due to a number of reasons, such as a mental illness, inability to connect with others, poor performance at work, bad stress-coping skills, low self-esteem, loss of a loved one, etc. An individual addicted to drugs can face a number of damaging consequences, such as loss of employment, loss of loved ones/relationship, financial trouble, homelessness, imprisonment for aggressive and violent behavior, and even death in adverse circumstances. Therefore, one must stay safe by preventing the risk of getting addicted to both prescription and illegal form of drugs.
Drug addiction is a preventable disease. Therefore, it is important to understand that this chronic illness can be prevented by taking simple measures by any individual. While preventive programs can be a great way to spread awareness among people about the harms caused by drug addiction, it is an individual’s responsibility to take care of his or her health and ensure the well-being of the society by following preventive measures and assisting others to lead a healthy life.
Seek holistic treatment to overcome drug addiction
Despite continued awareness campaigns through media and educational programs to dissuade people from abusing drugs, many people still end up abusing them and getting addicted. It is important to offer the best kind of assistance to such people to ensure recovery from addiction and a healthy life.
A successful treatment program normally includes steps like evaluation for any co-occurring mental health issue such as depression and anxiety, detoxification, behavioral counseling, medications, a follow-up program to prevent relapse, etc. However, one of the matters that concerns many addicted to drugs and their loved ones is finding the most suitable treatment facility in their vicinity.
